MAX vs Video DownloadHelper
Video DownloadHelper is old, popular, and many people still know it.
But if you landed here, you probably already hit the usual wall: limits, broken flows, weak media info, missing subtitles, messy extraction, or websites where it just does not catch the real stream.
This is a Chrome-focused comparison with VDH v10. Firefox differences are irrelevant here.
YouTube and DRM-protected media are not supported in MAX. Same legal wall, no magic here.

Where MAX is clearly stronger
No premium wall for normal downloading
MAX is free. I do not lock advanced downloads behind hourly limits.
If you want to download HLS, DASH, direct MP4/WebM media, extract audio, save subtitles, record live streams or keep original quality — that is the normal product, not an upsell.
Subtitles are first-class
A lot of downloaders detect only the raw video or audio and leave you with a useless file when the subtitles matter.
MAX can detect, download, extract and mux subtitles where the source exposes them. This is a big deal for anime, courses, foreign videos, webinars and multi-language media.
Better media analysis before download
MAX tries to show what the item actually is before you waste time on it: preview, size, duration, quality, container, audio tracks, subtitle tracks and stream state where available.
That matters on pages full of junk media, ads, previews, tiny fragments and broken stream variants.
Stronger support for difficult websites
MAX has custom handling for many websites and media patterns that generic downloaders miss: Kinescope, Telegram, Vkontakte / OK, abyss.to CDN, Asian streaming, microdrama and many 18+ websites.
Some of these needed custom solutions, not just “catch URL and pray”. That is where a lot of downloader extensions die.
Smart Naming is not just filename cleanup
MAX has a real filename rules engine: templates, page data, media data, URL parts, replacements, regex substitutions and case transforms.
If you download many files from the same websites, this saves boring manual cleanup.
Better control without turning the extension off
MAX lets you pause detection per website, stop detection globally, use Extensive Detection only when needed, search/filter/sort found media, highly customize your experience and tune behavior without constantly going seeking for other downloaders for specific websites.
Where VDH still makes sense
Use VDH if you already paid for premium, your websites work, and you are happy with its workflow.
That is the only reasonable case. If you are already frustrated enough to search for alternatives, then the comparison is not complicated.
My blunt take
VDH has history. MAX is better overall: subtitles support, more website, higher perfromance, significantly more customization, better UX and better support by active solo developer actually reading reports.
Try both if you want. You will see the difference fast.
