Install MAX Desktop App

The browser extension works on its own. App installation is optional.
It's open-source, free to use, and completely private.

Step 1: Add the browser extension

Start here. The desktop app connects through the extension and cannot be used by itself.

Step 2: Download Desktop App

All download links point ot GitHub releases – the app is free & open source. Install it for local processing with up to 30% higher performance compared to browser downloads.

Security warnings: Apple and Microsoft require paid code-signature for $300-500 per year to hide security warnings. As a free tool with no revenue, I cannot justify this expense. VirusTotal verification and open source transparency provide equivalent security assurance without the cost.

Step 3: Installation Instructions

Run the app once to self-register in the system. Successful connection will be shown in the extension under Status: Connected.

macOS

  1. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file.
  2. In the window that opens, drag mvdcoapp.app into the Applications shortcut.
  3. Open Terminal (Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal, OR open Spotlight, type "Terminal", press Enter).
  4. Run this command to bypass Gatekeeper:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/mvdcoapp.app" && open "/Applications/mvdcoapp.app"
    What does this command do?
Apple adds a quarantine attribute to apps downloaded from the web, preventing them from launching. This command removes that attribute and launches the app. The source code is published on GitHub if you want to inspect it first.
Check the connection: open MAX → Settings. You should see CoApp: Connected. If it stays on Checking..., close and reopen MAX once.

Windows

  1. Double-click the downloaded .exe installer.
  2. If SmartScreen appears: click More info -> Run anyway.
  3. Follow the setup wizard -> Install -> Finish.
Check the connection: open MAX → Settings. You should see CoApp: Connected. If it stays on Checking..., close and reopen MAX once.

Linux

  • Autoinstall (recommended):
    Run this command in terminal:
    curl -sSLf https://github.com/Suwot/mvd-coapp/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash
  • Manual installation: Download tar.gz, extract anywhere (per-user only), and run ./mvdcoapp --install once to register with installed browsers.
Check the connection: open MAX → Settings. You should see CoApp: Connected. If it stays on Checking..., close and reopen MAX once.
